About our Community of Faith
Hello!
We are a small church with strong ties to our community. We come as we are and we welcome you as you are. We gather as locals, newcomers and seasonal travellers. We welcome married people, divorced people, single people, families and LGBTQ people of all ages and stages of life. Our buildings are wheelchair accessible and hearing assist services are available. We hope to welcome you too.
Faith & Values
The words "In God We Trust" greets you as you enter the sanctuary. Cressy Glenora Church is rooted in the Christian faith and in the tradition of The United Church of Canada. We come from many backgrounds, some among us are spiritual but not religious people, some are people returning to their faith after a time away, some deeply religious folks, some atheists, and some people who simply like the coffee and conversation. Our members and friends include people who do yoga, people who practice Buddhist meditation, and people who find their greatest connection in sports and nature. We all benefit from the faith and spiritual gifts we can share in this place.
What to Expect on Sunday Morning
Sunday mornings we gather in our heritage chapel and sometimes outdoors in summer. Our worship seeks to speak to people and issues of today. We sing, pray and read mainly from the bible and we also hear from other inspiring contemporary sources. We use inclusive and expansive language for God. Congregation members participate in leading portions of the service. We have a lovely pianist who leads our singing mostly from the hymn book with some inspiring secular music too. Most folks dress in a neat yet casual way. The overall feeling is contemporary, relaxed and sociable while respecting our most important traditions. We enjoy hearing the sounds and noises of children during worship. Teenagers and young adults are welcomed by our minister and us all. Members of the LGBTQ and Two-Spirit community and their partners, friends and family are welcome and affirmed. We have all-gender washrooms. Our buildings are wheelchair accessible. We have hearing assist available. After the service we usually gather for coffee and fellowship. We hope to meet you and yours soon!
Our History
The history of our church includes the merging of two church stories. Our current church building was established in 1877 and is a beautiful local heritage building. In 2020, Glenora United and Cressy United joined together to form Cressy Glenora United Church. Over the past 143 years our combined communities have grown in faith and service.
Burley Hall
We gather in Burley Hall, our log cabin community space that was built in 1987. The hall has a warm inviting space with lots of natural light. The hall is air-conditioned with updated flooring, a full kitchen, two washrooms, and a wheelchair ramp. Outside we have a fire pit and a patio table and chairs for community use. We love this space for fellowship and special events.
