As many of you may know, I moved here from the big city. Montreal had lots of opportunities... for work, for culture and for being involved. But I never would have imagined that there would be even more amazing opportunities here in Prince Edward County! For example, I was honoured to be filmed for a local documentary about community development. They asked me and others to speak on "community" in Prince Edward County.

"The longtime residents have kept this place beautiful and have kept the community alive for such a long time. There is wisdom here. And that is a huge asset." ~ Aaron (in documentary)

The video was created for ThrivePEC, an organization focused on "helping Prince Edward County to become a better place to live, work and thrive." You'll notice our very own church in the video and other beautiful locations and interesting people from around the County.

"To build strong community, I think people should return to common spaces where everyone is welcome... no matter what." ~ Aaron (in documentary)

On Sunday, November 13th, we invited folks to gather in Burley Hall to watch the documentary. Then over coffee we talked about what community means to each of us. Some people said community was "where you live and where you volunteer." Some people said, community is defined geographically, while others said "we are part of the global community." Some folks said community is about shared values. Some said community is shaped by politics.

We also asked ourselves: What are the qualities of a good community? Our answers included: Grassroots organizing. Support our local economy. People caring for each other. Knowing people. Where people are helpful. Trust. Feeling Safe.

What is your definition of community? What are the qualities of a strong community, to you?

This was a fascinating conversation with many opinions and different points of view. Alot of great sharing and listening happened. Big thanks to those who participated. Now is your turn, dear reader. I'd love to know YOUR point of view. Send me an email and let me know "What is YOUR definition of community?" and "What are the qualities of a good community, to you?" :) You are welcome to email me.

YOUTH VISIONING EVENT at PECL

Yesterday I attended the "Youth Truth" event organized by "Greater Than Youth" (a local collective serving County teenagers). The gathering was held at PECL (Prince Edward Learning Centre Lab). Youth organizers created posters showing their ideas on what makes up good communities. One high school student took time to look at the posters with me. I listened to her point-of-view on what it’s like to grow up here… the challenges, hopes and joys facing County teens and youth. I learned that there are some big challenges (such as social issues, jobs and housing). I also learned there are some big opportunities (such as amazing energy, creativity, an all-are-welcome spirit and a willingness to work together.) Big thanks to "Greater Than Youth" for the invite (and the free pizza!!!) Congratulations to the youth leaders for offering an educational and inspiring event.
